FLOW: Towards health via protein quality control

The FLOW consortium investigates how faulty proteins damage cells and cause disease. Health is not a given as it is challenged often by the body’s own proteins. To prevent harm, cells have a vast quality-control system in place that supports, corrects, or removes damaging proteins. Failure of the quality-control network results in many diseases including Alzheimer, Parkinson, metabolic diseases, and cystic fibrosis. FLOW aims to understand so much of the effects and machinery of the quality-control process that we can take a step towards preventing and curing diseases.

FLOW: Naar gezondheid via eiwitkwaliteitscontrole

Het FLOW consortium onderzoekt hoe defecte eiwitten gezonde cellen beschadigen en ziekte veroorzaken. Gezondheid is niet vanzelfsprekend; de cellen in ons lichaam worden vaak bedreigd door fouten in de eigen eiwitten. Om schade door defecte eiwitten te voorkomen worden ze normaal gesproken door het kwaliteitscontrole-systeem van de cel gerepareerd of verwijderd. Als kwaliteitscontrole faalt, leidt dat tot ziekten als Alzheimer, Parkinson, stofwisselingsziekten en cystic fibrose. FLOW streeft ernaar het kwaliteitscontroleproces van de cel zo goed te begrijpen dat we die kennis kunnen gebruiken om ziekten te voorkomen en genezen.
